National Commission for Scheduled Tribes

  • The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes is a constitutional body. It is formed under Article 338A of the Constitution.
  • A National Scheduled Castes and Tribes Commission for Scheduled Castes and Tribes was established by the 65th Constitutional Amendment Act 1990. The Act came into effect on 13 March 1992.
  • In 1999, a new tribal ministry has been set up to give impetus to the welfare and development of Scheduled Tribes.
  • Article 338 has been amended by the 89th Constitutional Amendment Act 2003 to divide the National Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission into a National Scheduled Castes Commission and National Scheduled Tribe Commission.
